thursdaynext has decided to start a new monday tradition for this season of sharing called - good things. i might participate in my own haphazard manner which means .. these posts will never be posted on a monday, these posts will be poorly written and this post may be the only post on this subject matter.

these are my good things for this particular tuesday. I will title this post:

"good things to do on a tuesday when your furnace has decided to go on the blink and you wake up to a frigid house because it's been really rather very cold for 6 weeks straight and the nights have especially been frigid and your husband is gone on a business trip and you have nobody to warm the bed with you and your child wakes up sick and you find out that the schools are on a two hour delay because there is black ice on the roads".

1. you wake up at 5 a.m. realizing how frigid it is. you soon realize the furnace is not working. you wrap yourself in your husband's robe which drags along the floor because you are short and he is tall and go into the frigid kitchen to make coffee.

2. you go to the lower level of the house (not the main part of the house) and turn on the gas fireplace which has a blower so the heat blows out. you close all downstairs rooms so the heat will travel up the staircase. you check blogs on the computer and in general leave your usual silly comments.

3. you grab the portable heating unit (it's a safe one) and take it into your bedroom and proceed to get ready for the day. you check on the children and realize the youngest is ailing. the heating unit goes into his room. with a sick child and no heat the only thing to do is to call in sick yourself. you go back to the computer and write a substitute lesson plan for the rest of the day which you email to your school.

4. you start straightening up the kitchen a bit since the previous evening you had baked brownies to take to a boy scout christmas party. you decide that one way to keep the kitchen warm is to keep on baking and cooking. so you make more brownies .. with pecans this time, you make a sweet potato casserole, you peel apples and decide to make crock pot apple butter into which you decide to dump a generous amount of eau-de-vie poire william .. you know .. in german we refer to this as williams-christ birnen schnapps (pear schnapps), you make lentil soup. you wash all dishes by hand because your dishwasher had long ago gone on the blink. hot water keeps the hands warm anyway.

5. while all this is going on you had already gotten wood and started a fire in the living room. luckily that fireplace can be closed and has a blower that will blow the hot air into the room. you keep that fire going while you are baking and cooking.

6. you vacuum the floors where you discover that the dog had found some napkins and has shredded them all over creation. you make sure your sick child is fed and warm under covers in the den. the portable heating unit always goes where the ailing child is.

7. by this time of the day, you are so warm, your feet are feeling toasty, the house smells of cooked apples, brownies, sweet potato casserole, soup, cinnamon, wood from the fireplace ..

but you are exhausted ..

and you could stand to have a nap..

except that the darn people from the furnace company are still not here ..

and you know that as soon as you lay down they will come knocking on the door...

oh, well ..

best to check on the fire again..

anybody care for some schnapps? i might just have a swig.

I hope you are still warm and toasty and that you get to replace the now empty? bottle soon.
I want to risk the cold and come over and try all that yummy sounding food.
I hope the wee one is better by now too.

it sort of sounds like a good day other than a sick child.

SJ said...

Cooking a la Macbeth witches are we ;)

I will have some schnapps ... OK... I'll have all of it.

X. Dell said...

Hmm. If my husband's shorter than me, then can I adjust the steps that you outline here?

Also, I'm more likely to bake cookies than brownies. Would these do as an appropriate substitute? Because I'm thinking Cub Scouts shouldn't be eating brownies until they're at least eighteen.

Sounds like a rotten day all around. I could ask if the furniture people made it to your place in good time. If we see frozen typing tomorrow, I guess we'll know our answer.

J Cosmo Newbery said...

Schnapps? Did someone mention schnapps?

foam said...

and there's still some left .. :)

you okay, honey? ... cause, you know .. i didn't know you had a hubbie.
cookies would be fine for boy scouts. both my sons are too old for cub scouts. but brownies are fine too since mine are not laced ... and it appears yours are? how many of those had you had tonight?
furniture people? .. poor thing, you .. i'm rather worried now.
however, i can tell you that the computer keyboard is not frozen ..
all is well on this front.

you KNOW it.... ;)
and the schnapps you'll have to share with cosmo ..
and heidi ..

actually not bad at all .. not bad at all ..

actually while the bottle is less then half full now, there's still plenty in it. the food was all yummy and there's still leftovers.. come on over .. :)

and, this is where I shine as a friend, because you call me and I come help.
Oh sure, so danged tall the kids are startled when I walk in, but, with a mommie brownie in one hand and a small plate of same in the other, they soon calm down long enough to get a sugar fix, run around the room a few dozen times then crash right into their beds....heat's fixt there....
Make coffee so strong, your first drink stuns you, you stand perfestly still wondering if this is a hallucination, and the heater guy shows up.
Give him some of that coffee and he fixes the furnace in no time at all, and, since he took no time at all, no charge.
But, it don't matter cause I hauled in enough wood for a week if y'want.
I beg another brownie off ya and head on home.

foam said...

i bet you would have been great help, boney ..
we could of talked, had a brownie and a strong cup of coffee
my kids might be just a tad older then you think. and my 17 year old can almost look you in the eye at 6'2 or 3 inches now ..
heck .. and for a weeks worth of wood, i'd of given you all the brownies ... :)

dianne said...

Well you've been a busy little Foamie with all of your baking and such, but still you found the time to come over and see me this morning, thanks friend I appreciate that. ♥
I hope you're all nice and warm now and that your son is feeling a whole lot better.
Nice of Boney to offer his help, hes a kind man.
Anyway I haven't got anything new posted this morning but you're welcome to stop by and I'll fix you some coffee. :-) ♥ ♥

Aunty Belle said...

May I have some of yore apple butter and lentil soup, please.

Happy Thursday. Soon it will be Tuesday again for reading Monday memes.

boneman said...

....and for future reference, just bound on over and get`cha a cup.
I make it the night before in one of those 'air-pots' and that way don't use near the electricity.
Plus, since the oils of the coffee don't burn away, it stays fresher and gooder (figure that would get the attention of a school marm.....'gooder', indeed)

Now, if you bring brownies with you, watch out for Gni Gni. She'll snap up a brownie as fast as a banana or a piece of ham.
Clever lil dog, that.

I remember the furnace biting the dust the first winter Doug and I owned our home. Apparently the previous owner was an electrician who had jury-rigged the furnace to sort of lurch through the home inspection (which had been in AUGUST) but when called upon to do some actual heating, the 30-year-old unit just couldn't do it. What it did, in fact, was spew oily dust all over the house and make the basement smell like a truck stop. We ended up getting a natural gas furnace. Yay!

Yeah... That was fun. Ugh!

I hope your child gets better soon, and I hope you can get your furnace fixed!

HLiza said...

Oh it's so depressing that you need some gadgets for heat..I never have to think of that here..we're always hot! I feel like walking all the stuffs with you..nice. Hope the son gets better and you get some rest..did the repair guys make it?

foam said...

the son is indeed better. i sent him back to school today. the heat is working .. so far so good on that front .. :)

yeah, i think our unit is fairly old too ..
but it seems to be fixed. but the first home we owned just had an oil furnace .. man, was that stinky the first time we turned it on .. lol ..

you sure do sound likes you makes a gooder pot of coffee the me. and i'll bring plenty of brownies .. enough for gni, gni you and me .. and anybody else who might would wanna show up.

of course you can have some apple butter and lentil soup ..

i always enjoy vising your blog. it's a relaxing treat for me. and yes, boneman is a nice man...:)
and what with all this coffee i'm being offered this evening, i'll never get to sleep .. :)

Ruela said...

haha ;)

yr the best!

Lady Prism said...

Woweee!!! I would love to have everything you baked, and cooked, and whatever drink that is!

Over here it's cool, but can't compare to the chill you have. Sometimes tho' we go on vacations up in the mountains where there are lots of pine trees and the homes have fireplaces.

Did the guys from the furnace company show up while you were asleep???

this reminded me of a short story by Jamaica Kincaid called Girl: http://www.turksheadreview.com/library/texts/kincaid-girl.html

I want some schnapps! Wow, you really gotta have it together to live in a cold cold climate like that. I don't know if I could do it. I didn't do very well in the cold, the limited cold, in DC and Virginia and Maryland. Any further north, and I'd need a Surviving the Cold Manual. And eventually I'd need a Parenting in a Cold Climate Manual, I guess. And maybe a Repair Manual for Furnaces...although that'd be pretty advanced stuff there.

foam said...

what are you missing with schnapps? it really depends entirely on the schnapps ..

but bobby ...
i live only in the western part of north carolina .. lol ..
it can get cold here .. obviously ..
like virginia, dc..
but really, i grew up in germany. for the most part i never think we have a proper winter here.
