Many countries in the New World and elsewhere celebrate the anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas, which occurred on October 12, 1492 in the Julian calendar and October 21, 1492 in the modern Gregorian calendar, as an official holiday. The day is celebrated as Columbus Day in the United States, as Día de la Raza (Day of the Race) in many countries in Latin America, as Día de las Culturas (Day of the Cultures) in Costa Rica, as Discovery Day in The Bahamas, as Día de la Hispanidad (Hispanic Day) and National Day in Spain, and as Día de la Resistencia Indígena (Day of Indigenous Resistance) in Venezuela. (copied from wikipedia)

well, i reckon a happy columbus day is in order to all my fellow new worldians ..

and in order to help us celebrate .... heeeeeeeeeeere's burning spears with christopher columbus:

lessee, The Easter Inuits (?) started coming over around what, 10000 BC? Started in Alaska, worked down to Canada, kept filling the countryside, created great casinos...wait. That'll be later, right?

Several new, contemporary, and extinct tribes and civilizations come and go, and a bunch of Europeans land here and claim it in the name of God.
"COME AND GET IT!"
English, Dutch, Panish and French, all bringing their own small cache of Africans.
Fill the land in around 300 years, the Indians start revolting, (actually, they thought the Europeans were revolting) and the Europeans try to tie everyone down to their laws and ways, but....
REVOLUTION!

Next thing you know, we elect Bush junior and it all goes to hell in a handbasket.

Dang!
History of Amarica in big, stupid easy steps.

Oh yeah...then they build the casinos!

"C'mon SEVEN!"

(thanx)

Every one knows that Pugs from China meandered their way across the Bering Strait land bridge to discover "America" first. In fact, recently discovered core ice samples containing frozen "digestive byproducts" confirm it. Still, others arrived by UFO, but that's a story for another time.

As I have been learned Columbus never understood he found America, he thought all his life that he found a new route to India. But if he was right sj should be very close to you.

There is always a good reason for having a day off. We have many vacation days in Sweden but the more I learn about other countries so do I learn that very often foreigners take a day off for one or another reason.

The Macassins from Indonesia traded with the native aborigines for hundreds of years long before the Dutch discovered the north-west and western coast of Australia in the 1600's. They didn't settle because most of that area was desert.
The south-east coast was discovered in 1770 by Captain James Cook,on HMS Endeavour which sailed into Botany Bay in April 1770. Would you believe about half a block from where I was born! Sydney, New South Wales where I live was colonised 18 years later in 1788.
Cook named it New South Wales because it reminded him of the rolling green hills of Wales in the UK.
Australia is a beautiful country, the landscape is very diverse, from hot deserts, beautiful beaches, rolling green hills, lush forests to magnificent rain forests. We have some very modern beautiful cities which would rival any in the world.
We seem to get a lot of bad press in America with the 'down under syndrome', we are very civilised, there aren't kangaroos jumping everywhere and we dont speak in the way we are portrayed in some stupid ads that have been made to supposedly promote tourism here.
I blame this perception of us on some of the past and on some ridiculous movies that have been produced about our life style. :)
Now enough with my history lesson and tourist guide. :) ♥ xoxox

Yep... for me, Christopher Columbus Day is pretty much a 3-day weekend and not much else. After all, if we're going to consider European discoveries, Didn't Leif Ericsson set foot in North America centuries before Columbus did?

thanksgiving up here. but i prefer to think of it as giving thanks for the harvest than anything to do with columbusity. reading a book right now called 1491, about life pre-columbus, and the myriad misperceptions of such over the ages, right up to the present and the myths and misunderstandings we still hold.

foam said...
